Members of the Midtown Book Club are found murdered.

It is just the beginning of a series of deaths that lead Walt and Ox into the twisted world of a serial killer. In the late 1960's, the Zodiac Killer claimed to have killed 37 people and was never caught - the perfect crime.

Oscar Roach, dreamed of being the next serial killer to commit the perfect crime. He left a calling card with each of his victims - a mystery novel, resting in their blood-soaked hands.

The media dubbed him "The Librarian". Walt and the Kansas City Police are baffled by the cunning of this vicious killer and fear that he has indeed committed the perfect crime. Or did he?

Walt and his wacky senior cohorts prove, once again, that life goes on in spite of the carnage around them.

The perfect blend of murder, mayhem, and merriment.

What made the experience of listening to Lady Justice and the Book Club Murders the most enjoyable?
This is just a darn good series. I can relate to Walt, I'm male, mid 60's! I am entertained by the plot and the loveable group that Walt surrounds himself with. There is a serious side yet lots of humorous antics too!

What other book might you compare Lady Justice and the Book Club Murders to and why?
Well, I've enjoyed all of the Lady Justice series, either read or listened to. I've reviewed at least ten of the Audible editions.

Have you listened to any of George Kuch’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
George is superb! His preparation going into projects shows in the quality he adds to them! He has been narrating on the entire series thus far.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I savor, so I took a few breaks.

Any additional comments?
I have so much enjoyed the entire Lady Justice series. I'm in my mid 60's and strongly identify and admire Walt. The writing is exceptional, not high brow literature certainly, but intelligent, relevant, and funny!

I always ask myself after listening to an audio book, "Was it entertaining"? This most certainly was! I can't think of a better compliment than that.

A review copy was gifted to me at no charge. In return, I am happy to provide an honest review. Also at no charge.

Lady Justice and the Book Club Murders (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Thornhill George Kuch Books Reviews

A hypothetical discussion during a book club meeting turns to how to commit the perfect crime. Unknown to the other members, Oscar Roach isn't just discussing a what-if scenario, he's actually planning on doing just that and his fellow club members will be his first victims.

The main character, Walt Williams, is a 69 year old who works for a special department of the city police department as an investigator. He and his partner are pulled in to help with the investigation of what turns out to be a serial killer who is dubbed "The Librarian" by the media since he leaves a book with each victim. The reader knows who the killer is from the beginning, so it's more of a case of the reader being a bystander while the police scramble to find any clues to lead to the killer rather than one where you are solving the case along with the detectives to determine the murderer.

While this technique of the reader already knowing the identity of the murderer can work well in the hands of a masterful author, this book was marred by the other shortcomings including too many detours into irrelevant events. Examples of these detours include such items as a chapter devoted to the main character and his wife cleaning their apartment or several stand-up comedy routines by a not very funny comic.

The "humorous mystery" part of the series description might lead unsuspecting readers such as myself into thinking that a) these were cozy mysteries and b) that they were supposed to be funny. They strike out on both in my opinion. There is too much gory detail for me to accept this as a cozy mystery plus there are a few slips of language that may offend some readers and is not usually found in a cozy mystery. But even worse, the humor is of the low brow and often off-color variety that simply is not funny to me. Most of it is provided through a character who is a stand-up comic, and with material such as he is given in this book, it's not hard to understand why he's not a star performer.

The humor falls flat, the murderer isn't a mystery to the reader, and the shaky premise of a 69 year old police investigator with no previous background or training in law enforcement all add up into a not very satisfying story. Pared of the poor humor and irrelevant material, the basic plot of the serial killer could have been the basis for a pretty decent book, but with the excess fluff and poor choices of filler material by the author, it failed to live up to its potential.

Not recommended.

Walt and Ox are on the hunt for a serial killer called "The Librarian." All the supporting characters return in this next installment of Lady Justice series. The mystery, suspense, humor and romance will keep the listener fully engaged wanting to finish in one go. I've listened to this three times and it gets better and better.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. George Kuch is absolutely perfect for this series. I love listening to Lady Justice.

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
Below is the review that I posted on the Audible version of this book on June 30, 2017

The author provided me with a complimentary copy of this audiobook with no expectation of a review.

Lady Justice and the Book Club Murders is a book about a clever serial killer that poses his victims and leaves a different book at each crime scene to taunt the police. Each book provides the police with clues about the murders and hints about murders yet to come.

Walt Williams and his partner, Ox, work to solve the mystery and find out who the killer is and do so with their usual comedic flair. The author did a great job peppering the book with enough information about various serial killers to make the mystery interesting, while still keeping the witty banter between the characters to make it a lighthearted read.

The narrator, George Kuch, as usual, did an amazing job bringing the characters to life. At one point, there's a noticeable change in his voice. Almost as though perhaps he wasn't feeling well or something. It was noticeable because it's never happened in any of the other books. His voice just seemed flat, like his heart just really wasn't into reading just then. Other than that, it was a great performance as always. And even that one spot didn't last very long.
